The Armed Forces Skeet Association has a long and proud history.
It all began in 1961 with the first Armed Forces Skeet 12 Gauge Championship at Oceana NAS, Virginia. In 1962 the Championships moved to Ent AFB, Colorado with Air Force sponsorship of the Air Force Skeet Championships for MAC, SAC, and other Air Force entities. The other services were invited to attend those shoots where the big event became the interservice 5 Man Team Championships in the 12 gauge only. In 1972 the shoot expanded to a 4 gun format. In 1975 it became apparent that Ent AFB was on the verge of losing several fields that bordered their golf course.
The Armed Forces Skeet Association was formed in 1976 by LtGen Kenneth Pletcher (USAF, Retired), LtCol Ed Hughes (USAF, Retired), CDR Cotton Talbot (USN, Retired), and Col Steve Roberts (USAF, Retired) to insure the continuation of Armed Forces Skeet interservice competition. The first shoot under AFSA was held in 1976 at the National Gun Club in San Antonio, Texas and has continued successfully to this day.
In 1990 it was decided that it was time to recognize the most accomplished shooters in AFSA for their lasting contributions to our sport and to military competitive skeet shooting. The means of doing so was to create the Armed Forces Skeet Association Hall of Fame.
Membership in the Hall of Fame accrues to those service members whose skeet shooting accomplishments meet a stringent set of criteria. Selections are in two categories: shooting accomplishments directly tied to the AFSA Championships, and long term service to the Association. Those who are selected under the latter set of criteria receive both the LtGen Kenneth Pletcher Award and induction into our Hall of Fame.
